Hand Carved Hudoq Mask from Kalimantan

A SYMBOL OF GOOD LUCK

This beautiful mask comes from Kalimantan in Indonesia and is carved in wood with ancient techniques by local artisans. It's painted with traditional motifs, crowned by peacock feathers and is the only piece in our collection with this particular design.

Hudoq is a thanksgiving festival of the Dayak tribe on Kalimantan, happening in September - October every year. According to traditional beliefs hudoqs are thirteen crop-destroying pests, including rats, lions, and crows. In the festival the Hudoqs are symbolized by dancers who wear masks representing the pests and jackets made of areca palm or banana tree bark. The dance ends with two human hudoqs coming out and chasing the pests. The dance moves from village to village. During the festival villagers pray for prosperous crops and good luck, while also honoring their ancestors and mother nature. The Dayak people were once one of Asia’s most powerful warrior tribes.

The mask comes complete with the black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.

Dimensions: 100 x 54 x 47cm with the support and feathers
